Upgrading to a low-carbon heating system has never been more accessible. Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, homeowners and landlords in England and Wales can now benefit from generous grants towards the cost of installing energy-efficient heat pumps or biomass boilers.
What support is available?
Grants are available per property and can significantly reduce the cost of replacing traditional fossil fuel heating systems like gas, oil, electric or LPG:
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards a ground or water source heat pump (including systems on shared ground loops)
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler (rural, off-grid properties only)
Please note, hybrid systems (e.g. a mix of heat pump and gas boiler) are not eligible for support.
Who is eligible?
To apply, you must:
- Own the property (this includes homeowners, landlords, second homes and businesses)
- Be replacing a fossil fuel heating system
You can still apply even if you’ve already received funding for other energy efficiency improvements, such as insulation.
The heat pump or biomass boiler must be installed and commissioned by your installer within 120 days of application.
Property requirements
Your property must:
- Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) (issued within the last 10 years)
- Be suitable for the chosen low-carbon system, which an MCS certified installer can advise on
For biomass boilers, there are additional criteria:
- The property must be off the gas grid+
- It must be in a rural location
- The system must hold a valid emissions certificate
- Self-builds are not eligible for biomass boiler grants
Who is not eligible?
This scheme does not apply to:
- Most new build properties
- Social housing
- Properties that have already received support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
- Biomass installations in self-builds
However, if you’ve moved into a new build with a fossil fuel boiler already installed, you may still be eligible for a heat pump grant.
For self-builds, you are eligible for a heat pump grant if:
- You or the original owner commissioned the build
- It’s not been owned by a business or organisation
You’ll need to provide documentation, such as title deeds, to verify eligibility.
