Did you know you could be eligible for free or low-cost insulation to help keep your home warmer and reduce your energy bills?
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a UK Government initiative designed to support households across England, Scotland, and Wales. It aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and help residents cut down on heating costs—especially in homes with low energy performance.
What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?
The Great British Insulation Scheme offers financial support to help homeowners, landlords and tenants install insulation measures that can significantly improve a property’s energy efficiency. The scheme is open to:
- Homeowners
- Private tenants (with landlord permission)
- Social housing tenants
The programme is specifically targeted at properties with lower Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings (D to G), and those in Council Tax bands A to D in England or A to E in Scotland and Wales.
📍 Please note: The GBIS is not available in Northern Ireland.
What types of insulation are covered?
Under the scheme, eligible households may receive support to install a range of energy-saving insulation measures, including:
- Cavity wall insulation
- Loft insulation
- Heating controls
- Flat roof insulation
- Room-in-roof insulation
- Internal wall insulation
- Underfloor insulation
- External wall insulation
A contribution may be required depending on the type of service and property.
These improvements help reduce heat loss, lower energy consumption, and increase overall comfort in your home.
Who can apply for the GBIS?
You may be eligible for support if:
- Your home has an EPC rating of D to G
- Your property falls within Council Tax bands A–D in England or A–E in Scotland or Wales
Unlike some schemes, you don’t need to be receiving benefits to qualify. However, if someone in your household is on a low income or receives certain means-tested benefits, you may be eligible for additional support.
What do you need to apply?
To check your eligibility for the scheme, you’ll need to provide:
- Your total household income
- Information about any benefits received by household members
- A contact email address or phone number so your energy supplier can follow up
Why apply for the Great British Insulation Scheme?
With rising energy prices and a growing focus on sustainability, the Great British Insulation Scheme offers a valuable opportunity to:
- Reduce your energy bills
- Improve your home’s comfort
- Lower your carbon footprint
If you’re looking to future-proof your home while saving money, this scheme is well worth exploring.
